Speaker Series: Global Lessons in Democratizing Iraq

In the fall of 2005, the Political Science Department sponsored a series on "Global Lessons in 'Democratizing' Iraq." The focus of the series was on the role of U.S. policy in the political development of Iraq and overall lessons from this experience for democratization in other parts of the world. The department hosted two expert speakers who spoke to a general audience and also led a smaller discussion forum. The talks by each speaker are available below.

William M. Bulger

William M. Bulger, past President of the Massachusetts State Senate and President of the University of Massachusetts, delivered three talks at Northeastern University during the 2004-05 academic year. Each talk highlighted a key area of Massachusetts state politics in which President Bulger made an important contribution. Click on the links below to see a copy of each talk.

William M. Bulger represented South Boston in the Massachusetts Legislature for 35 years. He was first elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1960, then to the State Senate in 1970 as the senator from the First Suffolk District. From 1978 to 1996, he served as President of the Massachusetts Senate. His tenure as President was the longest in state history. In 1996, he was appointed President of the University of Massachusetts. He held this position until September, 2003.
