Alumni News and Updates 2009-10

Myron Greenberg (BA 1965, MA 1967) recently published a Review of Michael S. Goodman's Spying on the Nuclear Bear: Anglo-American Intelligence and the Soviet Bomb, in the Autumn 2009 issue of Naval War College Review. Myron currently works as a Contract Administrator in the U.S. Department of Defense, Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA), Aeronautical Systems Division and over his long career has been published on many occasions.

MPA Alum elected as President-Elect of APWA
George R. Crombie (MPA 1989) was recently elected President-Elect of the American Public Works Association (APWA). Elected by APWA's 29,000 members, Crombie serves in this leadership position with the new President, Larry T. Koehle, P.Eng., the Director of Public Works and Engineering for the Town of Caledon, Ontario. APWA provides educational services and promotes increased investment in public works and infrastructure systems. Crombie will assume the presidency of APWA in 2010-11.

Crombie, who has served on the Board of Directors since 2004 and as chair of APWA's Solid Waste Management Committee and as a member of the APWA Government Affairs Committee, is President of Crombie Consulting, specializing in public works/utility management, education and sustainability management. He recently served as Secretary of Natural Resources for the State of Vermont, overseeing more than 600 employees and an $80 million budget. Crombie's career has included public works directorships in the Cities and Towns of Durham, N.H.; Burlington, VT.; Nashua, N.H.; and Plymouth, Mass. He also served as the Undersecretary of Environmental Affairs for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

In his APWA career, Crombie was key to initiating the Blueprint for Education and Certification for public works professionals. He was also named one of APWA's Top Ten Public Works Leaders of the Year in 2002, was a former recipient of a Jennings Randolph Fellowship, and was awarded the Charles Walter Nichols Award in 2001 for his work on environmental issues. Prior to his being named President-Elect, Crombie was serving a second term as APWA Board Director-At-Large, Environmental Management. In addition to his MPA degree from Northeastern University, Crombie holds a BS degree from the University of New Hampshire.

Ivo Tankov (MPA 2009) has been hired as an associate in the Tax Services Department of Ernst & Young in Poland. As an associate, Ivo will be specializing in providing tax advice during mergers and acquisitions of government as well as publicly traded companies. Ernst & Young is one of the biggest financial/consulting services companies in the world.

Itir Tokosz (PhD 2007) had her peer-reviewed article titled, "The Turkish Military's Perception of Instability as an External Threat and Terrorism" published by The Defense Against Terrorism Review.

Robert Antonellis (MA 1999) was recently promoted to Chief of the Asia Terrorism Analysis Unit at the FBI. The Asia Terrorism Analysis Unit has 15 analysts and is the unit in the FBI responsible for strategic analysis of the terrorist threat to the US from Asia- which includes Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India.

In November 2008, the FBI Legal Attache in India and the FBI Assistant Director placed Robert on the FBI Rapid Response Team which was sent to Mumbai, India for the November 26-28 terrorist attack in Mumbai because of his knowledge of South Asia and terrorist groups in the region. Robert was the only analyst in the US Intelligence Community sent from the US to Mumbai and served as the intelligence link between the two countries for 45 days.

In February 2009 Robert returned to New Delhi, India for an additional 60 days to continue to study the terrorist attacks and support the FBI mission in South Asia. This was the seventh time the FBI assigned Robert to South/Central Asia.

Michelle Lee (PhD 2006)has published her book, A Fair Go: Race Politics and Public Discourse in Australia.

Joel Gagne (BS 1996) has been involved in political campaigns for over 20 years. This includes co-op work with the Irish Parliament, US Congress, and the White House Office of Presidential Scheduling and Advance. It also includes serving as an elected School Board Member from Hull, MA. After Graduating from Northeastern, Joel attended Harvard University for graduate studies. Joel has worked in over 30 states as part of his political work.

Jeff Pearlman (MA 1973) who recently retired after teaching in public schools for 36 years, continues to teach on a part-time basis at Salem State College and Bunker Hill Community College. He also lectures on cruise ships about the culture, history, and governments of the ports of call. As he notes, "Northeastern has prepared me well for the gathering of research and presentation skills." He also notes "great memories of classes taken with Professor Bob Cord."
